Boundaries That Heal: How Saying No Can Save Your Ministry and Your Health

Many believers struggle with saying no, fearing they will disappoint others or fail in their calling. Yet, Jesus Himself set boundaries. In Luke 5:16, “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” If the Son of God needed time away, so do we.

Why Boundaries Matter

  1. Not Every Good Work is Your Assignment – Even Jesus didn’t heal everyone. In Mark 1:38, He left a town despite people still needing Him, saying, “Let us go somewhere else…that is why I have come.”
  2. Busyness Doesn’t Equal Faithfulness – Martha was distracted by serving while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. Jesus said Mary had chosen “what is better” (Luke 10:41-42).
  3. Overcommitting Leads to Burnout – Moses’ father-in-law warned him that trying to do everything alone would “wear you out” (Exodus 18:18).

How to Set Healthy Boundaries

  1. Pray for Discernment – Ask God which assignments are truly from Him (James 1:5).
  2. Learn to Say No – Not every request is yours to fulfill. Paul delegated tasks (Acts 6:2-4).
  3. Prioritize Rest and Renewal – Guard time for worship, prayer, and family.

By setting healthy boundaries, you not only protect your health but also serve more effectively in God’s strength.

Book of the week

Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Earley explores how everyday family routines shape spiritual formation and discipleship. Earley emphasizes that the small, repeated actions within a household—like mealtimes, bedtimes, conversations, and discipline—are opportunities to cultivate a Christ-centered home. Drawing from personal experiences, he offers practical ways to intentionally shape family rhythms to reflect God’s grace and love. The book encourages parents to view ordinary moments as sacred and to develop habits that lead to deeper relationships, spiritual growth, and a stronger family foundation rooted in faith.
